VN strives to produce 2.1 mil. tons of sugar by 2020

VNGOVNet – To develop sugar production in an effective, sustainable and environmental-friendly way and in conformity with the plan to restructure agriculture and rural economy towards industrialization and modernization in the coming time, the PM has just signed Decision 26/2007/QĐ-TTg approving the Planning Scheme for Sugar Development to 2010 and Orientations to 2020.

February 22, 2007 7:06 AM GMT+7

Accordingly, the State will partly invest in infrastructure development (transport and irrigation) in concentrated sugarcane planting areas; carry out scientific and technological research and transfer to raise productivity, quality and efficiency of the sugar production; encourage and assist sugar mills and companies in creating their own trademarks and promoting sugar trade.

The sugarcane processing mills should set up their own plans on developing sugarcane areas in line with the approved planning schemes; take specific measures and policies to assist sugarcane growers in developing concentrated material areas, applying techniques of intensive cultivation and mechanization to improve sugarcane yield and quality; sign consumption contracts with the growers or their societies; and modernize soon the production and quality managing system to ensure food safety and hygiene.

Investment capitals will be mobilized from other legal sources, together with State finance, to build infrastructure in concentrated material areas, increase productivity and quality, and reduce transport costs.

Under the Decision, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will make an annual report on production-consumption balance to facilitate production readjustment ; the Ministry of Trade will function as the main implementer, in collaboration with the MARD and  the Vietnam Sugarcane Association, in properly controlling domestic consumption of sugar to avoid price fluctuations.
