VN sends first female official to UN peacekeeping missions

VGP – The Ministry of National Defense granted a decision of the State President for the first female official to UN peacekeeping missions on October 30.

The move aims to realize the policy on gender equality, which is one of the UN millennium Goals.

Accordingly, Major Do Thi Hang Nga was assigned to supervise military operation in South Sudan in a 12-month term from October 29, 2017.

Director of the Viet Nam Peacekeeping Centre Colonel Hoang Kim Phung as saying that Vietnamese female officers are capable of performing the tasks as female peacekeepers in the UN’s peacekeeping missions.

Colonel Phung hoped that by 2020, Viet Nam would be able to raise the rate of Vietnamese female officers by 15%. 

So far, after three years since Viet Nam joined the UN peacekeeping missions, the country  sent 20 officers to perform the task in Middle Africa and South Sudan./.
