The Vietnamese Head of State made the call during his meetings with UN General Assembly President  Abdulla Shahid and UN Secretary General  Antonio Guterres on September 21 (local time) on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the U.S.

During the meetings, Nguyen reiterated that Viet Nam attaches importance to and supports the UN’s leading role in the global management system in response to general challenges and expects to promote comprehensive ties with the international organization.

Nguyen added that Viet Nam has spared no effort in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on taking care of people’s health.

The President took the occasion to thank the COVAX Facility and UN organizations for assistance for Viet Nam in terms of vaccines, medical supplies, policy consultations on disease prevention and economic recovery. He called upon the international organization to continuously support Viet Nam especially to conduct the large-scale vaccination campaign.

Viet Nam has do its utmost to contribute to the UN’s joint efforts especially as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 term, participate in the UN-initiated peace keeping missions, implement the Sustainable Development Goals, enforce the Paris climate change agreement, run for seats at UN organizations and contribute to the UN’s Reform Process, said the Vietnamese leader.

President Nguyen and the UN leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between the UN and ASEAN and uphold ASEAN centrality in settling regional issues, supporting the endeavors of ASEAN and relevant countries in maintaining peace and stability in the region, highlighting the importance of compliance with international laws especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The UN leaders praised Viet Nam’s increasing roles and positions in the region and international arena, lauding the country’s positive, responsible, and effective contributions to the UN especially as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2020-2021 term, peacekeeping efforts, and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and climate change issues.

The UN Secretary General affirmed that the UN would continue to back Viet Nam’s effort and stand by the country in the post-pandemic time.

He expected that Viet Nam would contribute to the joint efforts on climate change response and raise its commitments to cutting greenhouse gas emission in accordance with  the 2021 United Nations climate change conference, scheduled for November in Glasgow, the UK./.
