VN reports first foreign death of A/H1N1

VGP – The Health Department of Hồ Chí Minh City on Friday reported the first case of foreign death related to the swine flu A/H1N1 in Việt Nam. So far, the A/H1N1 death toll in the country reaches 13.

Medical workers are testing for A/H1N1 virus

According to the Ministry of Health, on September 25, Việt Nam confirmed 175 new cases tested positive to the A/H1N1 virus and three deaths, including two in Hồ Chí Minh City and one in the Central Highlands province of Đắk Lắk.

The first foreigner died of the swine flu was discovered in Việt Nam. A 49-year-old Australian, Mr. Fintan Anthony K., residing in District 3, Hồ Chí Minh City, was hospitalized on September 13 and died at 10.30 AM on Thursday, September 24. The cause was the acute respiratory distress syndrome found in A/H1N1 patients.

The second death was a 30-year-old male obese paralytic. Before being admitted to the hospital, he got high fever, runny nose, sore throat and dry cough. On September 21, he was hospitalized with high fever, breathing difficulties, respiratory failure and severe pneumonia. He was immediately treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His medial test showed positive to the A/H1N1 flu virus. Despite medical treatment, his conditions got worse and he died at 4.15 PM on September 24.

Also on Friday, the Health Department of Đắk Lắk Province reported a 23-year-old female patient, 36 weeks pregnant, died of A/H1N1. She started to have a fever with unidentified causes on September 20 and was treated at a polyclinic.

Three days later, she was moved to the provincial polyclinic in the conditions of high fever, breathing difficulties, coughing and sore throat. The patient died at 2.45 AM on September 25 after the treatment with Tamiflu, antibiotics and active resuscitation. She was also tested positive to the swine flu A/H1N1.

Up to 5.00 PM of September 25, Việt Nam confirmed 8,014 cases positive to the A/H1N1 virus and 6,495 among them have recovered and discharged from hospitals.
