VN regards poverty reduction as top task
VGP – In 2008, the percentage of poor households in Việt Nam is only 13%. The nation pledges to continue considering poverty reduction as its major mission. The international community has widely recognized Việt Nam’s achievements in poverty reduction as “one of the most spectacular stories of economic development”.

Those statements were made in a seminar, jointly organized by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), and the United Nations Development Program to celebrate the International Day for Eradication of Poverty and Việt Nam’s Day for the Poor (October 17) early this week.
MOLISA revealed that by the end of 2008, the number of poor households will be around 2.4 million, shrinking 2% against last year.
Việt Nam has early tackled problems of extreme hunger and poverty, fulfilling the millennium development goal in this field.
Different from other economies, Việt Nam has successfully maintained its high growth rates while controlling rich-poor imbalance. The Gini coefficient barely increased from 0.34 (1993) to 0.42 (2006).
Giving top priority to sustainable poverty reduction, the Vietnamese Government determines to implement current policies on assisting poverty reduction, improving the poor’s livelihood by giving them preferential production and services incentives, and vocational training, and building necessary infrastructure works.
Việt Nam considers the poverty reduction not only its important goal during the cause of socio-economic development but also a commitment to the international community in diminishing regional and global poverty.
