VN ready to improve ASEAN’s peacekeeping capacity

VGP – Viet Nam has been chosen by the United Nations to become a training site for peacekeeping forces of the region, said Deputy Minister of Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh, asserting that the nation is willing to play a more active role to help improve ASEAN’s peacekeeping capacity.

The Vietnamese leader made that statement at the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) and ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus (ADSOM+), which took place in Singapore from July 11 to 13.

At the ADSOM, heads of the delegations reaffirmed the importance of solidarity in the bloc to effectively respond to common security challenges, adding that ASEAN needs to continue promoting ties with major partners so as to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Otherwise, the country expects to boost connections with other countries in joint exercises, and share experience in military medicine, search and rescue activities, he added. 

Regarding the initiative on a network of ASEAN chemical, biological and radiological defence experts, he suggested the content of war consequence settlement be added to this network’s activities. This proposal was welcomed by participating countries.

As one of the countries taking the lead in handling war consequences, and Viet Nam is ready to share experience and dioxin remediation technologies with other ASEAN countries.

Mr. Vinh expressed his hope that ASEAN will enhance cooperation with its partners in fields of dealing with war- left bombs and mines.  

Within the framework of the ADSOM and the ADSOM+, Deputy Minister Vinh also had bilateral meetings with heads of the delegations of Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan and the U.S.
