VN pledges to push nuclear-weapon-free zones

VGP - Vietnamese Permanent Reppresentative to the United Nations Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga has affirmed that Viet Nam lauds international efforts to boost effectiveness of nuclear-weapon free zones established in Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Caribbean and South Pacific, as well as Mongolia’s nuclear free status.

April 27, 2015 3:18 PM GMT+7
Nga has made the statement during the third Conference of States Parties and Signatories of Treaties that Establish Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zones and Mongolia at the UN’s headquarters in New York.

She stressed that nuclear-weapon free zones have made important contributions to consolidating international peace and security and boosted efforts in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Together with other ASEAN member countries, Viet Nam commits to take practical actions in accordance with the Bangkok Treaty to establish the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons Free Zones, Nga affirmed.

Nga emphasised that in developing nuclear infrastructure for peaceful use of nuclear energy in the future, Viet Nam always abides by relevant international regulations to ensure nuclear safety and security.

Viet Nam also actively takes part in international efforts in this area, including fulfilling the responsibilities as Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the term 2013-2014, Nga added.

Representatives from over 100 member countries of nuclear-weapon-free zones and observingorganisations attended the conference held every five years to enhance effectiveness of nuclear-weapon-free zones and boost cooperation among the zones.

The conference taking place on the threshold of another conference to review the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was considered as an important forum for countries to reaffirm their commitments to working together towards nuclear weapon disarmament.
