VN patiently pursues poverty reduction in next ten years

VGP – During the past 25 years of renovation or “Đổi mới”, the Vietnamese Government has been always attaching economic development to poverty reduction, focusing on most vulnerable groups like children, women, the old aged, disabled persons, and ethnic minorities.

Though with limited resources, poverty reduction is always a top prioritized policy

Việt Nam is widely recognized by the international community for fulfilling some of the millennium goals ahead of schedule, including poverty reduction.

Recently, the Government adopted some mega projects, namely the national goal program on poverty reduction; socio-economic development program for extremely disadvantaged communes, mountainous and ethnic minority areas; program on quick and sustainable poverty reduction in 62 poorest districts, and others.

However, shortcomings have been found during the implementation of some programs which do not really comprehensively cover the purpose of poverty reduction. Many of them even function as social subsidiary policies.

The boom of poverty reduction policies, which are managed by different ministries and agencies, so that leading to confused and overlapped coordination, has resulted in their low efficiency.

To address the above shortcomings, a conference on shaping targets for the poverty reduction program in the period of 2011-2020 took place this morning in Hà Nội.

Participants focused on reviewing the current poverty reduction policies so as to offer better suggestions and proposals for the next ten years.

They also discussed basic rules for the Master Program on poverty reduction in the period of 2011-2020.

The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Labor-War Invalids and Social Affairs, and the UN Mission in Việt Nam.
