Việt Nam outpaces other Asian countries in terms of telecom growth
The event is hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), National Institute of Information and Communications Strategy (NIICS) and Beacon Events.

Participants, including telecom experts and businessmen, will discuss strategies and development trends of the telecom market, effective broadband business and mobile data models in Việt Nam.

Việt Nam targets to cover mobile wave to over 70% of its population by 2015 and become a telecom power by 2020 when the figure will be raised to 90%.

By 2015, some 20-30% of households nationwide are expected to have personal computers with Internet accession and over 80% use digital TV. Five years later, analog technology will be replaced by digital one.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Lê Nam Thắng said that the Government prioritizes telecommunication for socio-economic development.

In 2010, series of legal documents have been issued, including the Laws on Telecommunication and Radio Frequency which will come into effect since July 1, he added.

Việt Nam’s telecom market is among the world’s fastest maturing ones according to the International Telecom Union (ITU). During the hardest crisis years of 2008 – 2009, the telecom network continued expanding to remote and disadvantaged areas.

By the end of last year, Việt Nam recorded 3 million Internet subscribers or 22.9 million Internet users, up 45.5% and 10.3% respectively against the previous year. The number of broadband subscribers was estimated at 3 million. Compared to other Asian countries, Việt Nam’s Internet using ratio (26%) is clearly higher than Indonesia (13%), Thailand (24%) and the Philippines (25%).
