VN lauds UN’s efforts to settle situations in Nepal and Great Lakes Region

VGP – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) yesterday convened two consultations on Nepal and the Great Lakes Region.

January 17, 2009 1:48 PM GMT+7

Over the past three months, despite efforts made by the Nepalese Government, the drafting of a new Constitution in Nepal has evolved slowly. Thus, the UNSC decided to extend operation of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) six months more and called upon the Government to proactively remove difficulties.

At the meeting, Ambassador Bùi Thế Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative of Việt Nam to the UNSC, hailed political achievements gained by the Nepalese people over the past years and urged the related parties to highlight the spirit of dialogue and cooperation in addressing unagreed issues.

The Ambassador asserted that Việt Nam supports the 6-month extension of UNMIN. He also highly spoke of UNMIN’s fruitful cooperation with other UN agencies in Nepal in realizing reconstruction projects and assisting Nepal in the post-conflict period.

At the UNSC consultation on Great Lakes Region, Mr. John Holmes, UN Under-secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, informed criminal activities launched by rebels of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) against innocent people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and South Sudan as well as recent coordination between armies of Uganda, DRC and South Sudan in suppressing LRA.

Addressing the consultation, Ambassador Bùi Thế Giang expressed his deep concerns and condemned LRA rebels’ massacres and kidnappings. He demanded LRA to stop violation, recover the peaceful process towards the signing a Final Peace Agreement (FPA) with the Uganda Government.

The diplomat acknowledged joint military operations conducted by Uganda, DRC and South Sudan against LRA, calling these forces to closely work with humanitarian organizations and UN missions in the region, including the UN Organization Mission in DRC (MONUC), to ensure safety and humanitarian relief for common people.

Stressing the necessity of a comprehensive solution for the conflicts in the Great Lakes Region, Ambassador Giang hailed efforts made by Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region and international and regional forces to set up peace and stability in Uganda and the region.
