Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh made the above remarks at the General Debate of the 72^nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the US on September 22.

Viet Nam was admitted to the United Nations as its 149^th member on September 20, 1977 and the past four decades have been an era of transformations in the country.

The Deputy PM, FM said Viet Nam today is a dynamic economy on the path of reforms and sustainable development.

It has transformed itself from an aid-dependent to a lower middle-income country and MDG implementation efforts have helped bring tens of millions of Vietnamese out of poverty.

But one thing has not changed, said Deputy PM, FM Minh as “Viet Nam today is as a committed member of the United Nations as ever before. We are a staunch supporter and proponent of multilateralism with the United Nations at its heart.”

He expressed his belief in the fundamental role of international law and the UN Charter, the principles of respect for sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity, non-interference, non-threat or use of force, and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Deputy PM, FM Minh said Viet Nam is working closely with other ASEAN members to address common challenges.

With regard to the East Sea dispute, Viet Nam and ASEAN call upon all parties concerned to exercise self-restraint and settle disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, fully respect diplomatic and legal processes, implement the Declaration on the Conduct of parties on the East Sea (DOC) and expedite the completion of an effective and legally binding Code of Conduct (COC).

He also took the occasion to say Viet Nam takes pride in hosting the Asia – Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) this year as the country seeks to build an Asia-Pacific partnership for sustainable and inclusive development in the 21^st century.

On the sideline of the session, the Deputy PM, FM Minh met with FMs of Hungary and Saudi Arabia, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum Philipp Rosler and leaders from U.S. large corporations./.
