The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) worked with the Ninh Binh provincial People’s Committee to host a series of activities in response to the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22 in Ninh Binh.

On this occasion, the MoNRE presented a certificate which recognized Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve as the ninth World Ramsar of Viet Nam and the 2360th of the world.

These activities aimed to disseminate the linkages among food, nutrition, and health of people with biological diversity; mitigate and respond to climate change; recover the ecosystem; purify the water resource; and honor natural diversity.

Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve covers more than 3,000 hectares in Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province. Van Long is the largest wetland nature reserve in the Red River Delta and is considered as “Waveless bay” with tranquil water surface like a giant mirror reflecting spectacular natural sceneries.

This is a beautiful site that holds two national records for having the most Delacour's langurs and for being the largest unspoiled landscape in Viet Nam.

Van Long Nature Reserve is home to about 250 species of animals, including 72 varieties of birds; a dreamland for birdwatchers. Vast swathes of swooping egrets and low-flying stalks make for the most amazing sights in Van Long, while crakes and kingfishers watch on from the rocks and reed branches.

Along with its beautiful natural scenery, Van Long Wetland Natural Reverse also has many special cultural relics such as Hong Nuong Temple, Mau Temple, Thung La Temple, Thanh Son Pagoda, Dich Long Pagoda...

Earlier, eight world Ramsar sites in Viet Nam were recognized including Xuan Thuy National Park (Nam Dinh province); Bau Sau westlands in Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai province); Ba Be Lake (Bac Kan province); Tram Chim National Park (Dong Thap province); Ca Mau Cape National Park (Ca Mau province); Con Dao National Park (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province); Lang Sen Wetland Reserve (Long An province); and U Minh Thuong National Park (Kien Giang province)./.
