VN hails efforts to recover peace in South Ossetia

VGP – Việt Nam welcomes Russian President D. Medvedev’s cease-fire declaration and supports Russia’s and international community’s efforts to seek for peaceful measures to settle differences and disputes as well as prevent the recurrence of armed conflicts in South Ossetia, said the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesman.

Mr. Lê Dũng made the statement on August 14 while answering reporters’ question about Việt Nam’s assessment to the Russian Federation’s actions to recover peace in South Ossetia.

“Việt Nam also appreciates the principles for addressing conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhazia reached in the August 12 encounter between President D. Medvedev and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy,” stated the Spokesman.

On the same day, talking of Việt Nam’s response to the Malaysian Deputy PM’s visit to Hoa Lau Island in Việt Nam’s Trường Sa Archipelago, Spokesman Lê Dũng confirmed that: “Việt Nam’s stance on Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Islands and Trường Sa (Spratly) Islands is so clear. Việt Nam has full historical evidences and legal foundation to claim its sovereignty over these two archipelagoes.”

He emphasized that, as the two neighboring countries with a fine bilateral relationship and as members of ASEAN, Việt Nam and Malaysia should solve all issues through peaceful dialogues and negotiations on the basis of equality and respect to their legitimate rights and interests, in line with international laws and practices, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 and the Declaration of Conducts (DOC) 2002 in the East Sea.
