VN establishes Sub-committee to coordinate geoscience programs

VGP – Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung has signed a decision on the establishment of a Sub-committee for Coordinating Geoscience Programs in East and South East Asia (CCOP Viet Nam).

The Sub-committee shall represent Viet Nam at the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programs in East and South East Asia (CCOP) and coordinate activities of the Vietnamese agencies within CCOP’s activities. 

It is tasked to develop detailed plans on how to participate in the CCOP in order ensure the legitimate rights and interests of Viet Nam in this mechanism.

The Sub-committee is responsible for putting forward policies and laws related to sustainable conservation and development of seas and islands, contributing to firm protection of sovereignty,  sovereign rights and jurisdiction of Viet Nam’s waters.

It is also responsible for enhancing international cooperation in line with the Party and State’s guidelines and policies while utilizing financial and material support and assistance to strengthen the capacity of its staffs.

The Sub-committee is composed of one head, two deputy heads, one secretary and eight members.

The CCOP is an intergovernmental organization whose mission is to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of applied geoscience programmes in East and Southeast Asia in order to contribute to economic development and the improvement of the quality of life in the region.

It promotes capacity building, technology transfer, exchange of information and institutional linkages for sustainable resource development, management of geo-information, geo-hazard mitigation and protection of the environment.

The CCOP has fourteen member countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam.

It is supported by fourteen cooperating countries namely Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russian Federation, Sweden, United Kingdom and the US.
