Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc receives Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the GEF, Ha Noi, May 30, 2018

Welcoming Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the GEF, in Ha Noi on May 30, the Government leader stressed that Viet Nam attaches importance to the environmental issue, considering this a pillar in its development triangle (economy, society, and the environment).

In addition to finalizing institutions and policies, the Vietnamese Government always takes the environmental issue into account in its direction and management work, he affirmed.

For her part, GEF CEO Naoko Ishii thanked Viet Nam for hosting the Sixth GEF Assembly, which aims to deal with the pressing environment-related issues at present, including the marine debris.

Viet Nam has been making positive transformations in socio-economic development, but is also facing big environmental challenges in that process, she said, adding that the GEF will support Viet Nam in settling the environmental issue, thus helping the country to become a pioneer in the region concerning the field.

PM Phuc said that the Government has assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to represent the Vietnamese side in working with the GEF to organize the Sixth GEF Assembly.

Applauding the CEF’s cooperation, he called on the organization to assist Viet Nam in resolving environmental issues, especially in the spheres of biodiversity, climate change, the prevention of forest degradation, water resource management, and the disposal of waste and chemicals.

The PM also asked the GEF to implement projects to help Viet Nam to dispose marine trash, especially plastic waste, and deal with the challenges on climate change and sea level rise in the Mekong Delta region.

Hailing the issues raised by PM Phuc as global ones, Ishii affirmed the GEF’s joint efforts with Viet Nam to handle these problems.
