VN elected to UN Commission on International Trade Law

VGP – Viet Nam has been elected to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for the 2019-2025 tenure, winning 157 out of 193 votes at an election during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the U.S., according to the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry.

December 18, 2018 4:25 PM GMT+7

UNCITRAL was established by the UN General Assembly in 1966 to promote the progressive harmonization and unification of international trade law, thus reducing obstacles for the development of international trade.

Viet Nam’s maiden UNCITRAL membership shows its increasing international prestige, while reflecting the recognition of the country’s achievements in reforms and economic and trade development, as well as its active contributions to the common tasks of the international community, including the field of international trade laws.

As a member of the UNCITRAL, Viet Nam will have the chance to further learn from international experience to finalize its domestic legal framework in accordance with common standards, thus creating a favorable business climate for the goal of sustainable development. Viet Nam stood as a candidate for the UNCITRAL membership with the aim of accelerating multilateral diplomacy and contributing to facilitating peace and prosperity in the country, across the region and throughout the world, the Foreign Ministry said.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Viet Nam's Permanent Mission to the UN, said that Viet Nam’s UNCITRAL membership candidacy was motivated by the country’s external policy of active international integration, enhancing multilateral foreign relations and engaging in international law development.

Viet Nam’s membership of the commission marks a step forwards in the country’s international integration, especially in multilateral legal integration, while realising the country’s policy of helping build and shape common rules at international level and within the UN framework, he said.

It was the first time after years that the election of members to the UNCITRAL was conducted via the form of voting at the UN General Assembly, because there were more candidates than vacancies available in the Asia-Pacific and Western Europe groups.

In 2016, a representative of Viet Nam was also elected to the UN International Law Commission.
