VN chairs ASEAN Bankers Association

VGP – At the 39th annual meeting of the ASEAN Bankers Association (ABA) in Phnom Penh on November 19-20, Việt Nam officially took over the presidency of the association for the 2010-2011 term.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Phạm Huy Hùng, Chairman of the Việt Nam Bankers Association (VBA) and Chairman of VietinBank, said the taking-up of the ABA presidency is a honor of the Vietnamese banking sector, marking an important milestone in affirming its prestige in the region.

As the ABA’s rotating chairman for the 2009 – 2011 term, Mr. Hùng pledged that Việt Nam will spare no effort to contribute to the strong development of the association, enhance activities of the ABA and ASEAN, especially at ministerial economic and financial meetings, for the realization of the target of building the ASEAN Community by 2015.

The association will hold a series of seminars and talks to assess opportunities and challenges of the regional banking sector in the post-crisis period, and foster cooperation and connectivity among regional members.

The ABA was established in 1976 by five founder-members: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Then it admitted Brunei, Việt Nam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos./.
