VN calls on countries to contribute to peace, stability in East Sea

VGP – Viet Nam has called on countries to continue making active and practical contributions to the maintenance of peace and stability, to respect and implement relevant international legal obligations, and uphold the rule of law on waters and oceans.

Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang made that statement in reply to reporters’ question about U.S. naval vessel’s passing through the area of Viet Nam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

Viet Nam’s standpoint on sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the East Sea is clear and in line with the international laws, which has been stressed many times, she asserted.

As a member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS) and a coastal country along the East Sea, Viet Nam always respect the freedom of navigation and aviation of countries in the East Sea in accordance with regulations of international laws, particularly the UNCLOS.

The maritime claims and related actions of coastal nations must be consistent with international law as enshrined in the 1982 UNCLOS, she added.
