Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang made the statement during a regular press briefing of the ministry in Ha Noi while responding to reporters’ questions regarding recent developments in the East Sea such as foreign countries’ live-fire drills and U.S. naval ships’ navigation freedom activities.

“Once again, we affirm Viet Nam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes,” she declared.

As a member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 and a coastal country in the East Sea, Viet Nam always respects maritime and aviation freedom in the East Sea in line with the convention, she stressed.

At the press conference, the spokesperson also revealed a number of Viet Nam’s external relations activities in the coming time.

Earlier on October 1, 9 News reported that Australia along with Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will participate in live-fire drills in the East Sea, which runs from October 2-19.

This exercise will include a field training element, live fire serials as well as a command post exercise that will test the operability of Australian maritime, land and air elements.
