The event drew the attendance of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong; representatives from the World Bank (WB) and the UN in Viet Nam.

Addressing the event, Deputy PM Dung expressed his impression on the theme of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction (October 13), a practical one at global scale in line with the practices on natural disaster prevention and mitigation in Viet Nam.

According to the Deputy PM, the Vietnamese Government gives priority to protect life and health of people, then assets and projects.

Viet Nam has taken steps to respond to impacts of natural disasters and climate change by raising forecast competence; invest in projects in favor of people’s production and lives.

Viet Nam has also participated deeply and effectively in regional and international forums on natural disaster prevention.

However, to effectively adapt to natural disasters, it is necessary to combine a series of solutions in consideration of long-term scientific solutions on planning, population distribution, transformation of agricultural production model in response to impacts of climate change, and infrastructure development, said Deputy PM Dung.

The Government leader noticed the importance of reviewing and perfecting the legal system on disaster prevention, response, and rehabilitation.

Viet Nam will prioritize resources to invest in scientific and technological applications; raise weather forecast and warning efficiency; build infrastructure; and raise rescue and search capacity; and timely provide support in post-diaster periods.

In addition, the Government will implement training programs to raise awareness of specific plans in response to natural disasters; mobilize resources from the business circle and community to minimize natural disaster risks.

Especially, the World Bank and UN organizations play an important role in raising awareness; sharing experience.

On this occasion, Deputy PM Dung recommended the international community to support developing and poor countries to mitigate heavy impacts of natural disasters via better warning and forecast capacity and improvement of regulations on natural disaster prevention./.
