VN attaches importance to promoting and protecting human rights

VGP – Viet Nam has attached special importance to and seriously implemented the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a successful mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) based on the principles of equality, dialogue and cooperation, considering this as an obligation of a UN member state, and also an opportunity to introduce Viet Nam’s policies, efforts and achievements in promoting and protecting human rights since the last review in 2014.

The statement was made by Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang

The statement was made by Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang during the ministry’s regular press conference in Ha Noi on January 24 in response to reporters’ queries about the content of the dialogue session on Viet Nam’s national report under the third-cycle UPR of the UNHRC.

Hang said that on January 22, within the framework of the Working group on the third-cycle UPR of the UNHRC, the Vietnamese delegation, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, held a dialogue with 122 member states of the UN on the situation on human rights in Viet Nam.

Most countries recognized Viet Nam’s achievements in the field and encouraged the nation to maintain its efforts to ensure human rights, especially in the areas of economy, society, culture, social security, poverty reduction, in addition to ensuring the rights of vulnerable groups such as women, children, people with disabilities, and ethnic minorities. They also welcomed and highly appreciated Viet Nam’s seriousness in the implementation of the UPR recommendations adopted in the second cycle, as well as the development of the third-cycle UPR report.

During the dialogue, Viet Nam received more than 300 recommendations from countries with diverse content touching on all aspects on human rights. Viet Nam’s relevant agencies will carefully review the recommendations and submit them to the Prime Minister. As scheduled, Viet Nam will officially announce the approved recommendations at the regular session of the UNHRC in June 2019.
