VN attaches importance to Strategic Partnership with Singapore

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse will pay an official visit to Singapore from April 25-27 at the invitation of his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong.

April 24, 2018 4:52 PM GMT+7

The first official visit to Singapore made by PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc is organized on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties (August 1, 1973) and the fifth anniversary of the two countries' Strategic Partnership (September 2013).

Regarding defense cooperation, the two nations’ Ministries of Defense signed the Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation in 2009. They have maintained the defense policy dialogue mechanism at deputy-ministerial level and the joint working group on military-defense relations.

The two countries have strengthened mutual cooperation at international and multi-lateral forums such as ASEAN, APEC and ASEM.

Related to strategic security issues in the region, including the East Sea issue, the two sides have actively enhanced cooperation, shared viewpoints and advocated the standpoint of ASEAN.

Since 1996, Singapore has been listed among the largest trade partners of Viet Nam with the two-way trade value of US$7.1 billion and US$8.3 billion in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

As of the end of 2017, Singapore poured nearly US42 billion in 1927 projects in fields of real estate, processing and manufacturing industry and construction in Viet Nam, ranking third among 126 nations and territories investing in Viet Nam.

A total number of 11 Viet Nam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP), one of symbols of the two nations’ relations, locates in seven Vietnamese localities.

Viet Nam is investing in 65 projects in Singapore, mainly in such areas as petrol, retails, information technology and services.

In 2005, Singaporean Minister of Trade Lim Hng Kiang and Vietnamese Minister of Trade Truong Dinh Tuyen officially inked the Framework Agreement on Viet Nam-Singapore Connectivity in six areas including finance, investment, trade and service, transport, information technology and telecommunications, and education and training.

The two nations organized 12 sessions of the Singapore-Viet Nam Economic Connectivity Ministerial Meeting to review the implementation of signed agreements and propose cooperative measures for the upcoming time.

As many as 12,000 Overseas Vietnamese are living and studying in Singapore.
