VN an active, responsible member of the UN

VGP – Over the past four decades, Viet Nam and the United Nations (UN) have always strived to nurture and develop increasingly fine cooperation, with many positive results having been achieved.

September 20, 2019 6:30 PM GMT+7

With the efforts and effective contributions to the UN’s activities and development process, Viet Nam has been trusted and highly appreciated by the international community

Viet Nam  officially joined the UN on September 20, 1977, marking the recognition of the largest global organization on the planet and the international community for a peaceful, unified, independent, free and democratic Viet Nam.

Viet Nam has always taken the lead in promoting the struggle for national independence and respect for sovereignty and equality between countries; safeguarding international peace and security; fighting aggressive war and arms race; and supporting the comprehensive and radical disarmament.

Viet Nam has actively contributed to the process of developing and implementing the UN treaties and conventions, the foundation of the current international legal system. The country has also joined friends and developing countries to actively promote the process of building a fair, transparent and effective global multilateral institution, meeting the common aspirations of mankind.

On one side, Viet Nam always treasures the UN’s support and companionship in the cause of national construction and development, especially the valuable and practical support in terms of capital sources, grey matter and technology in the difficult years after the war.

On the other side, the Southeast Asian country has actively participated in and made a lot of practical contributions to all the three areas of the UN’s common concern, namely peace-security, development and ensuring human rights.

As an active and responsible member of the international community, Viet Nam always considers cooperation with the UN as one of the top priorities in its foreign policy

With the efforts and effective contributions to the UN’s activities and development process, Viet Nam has been trusted and highly appreciated by the international community, clearly reflected through the country’s election with a high number of votes to many UN agencies, including the UN Security Council (2008-2009), the UN Economic and Social Council (1998-2000 and 2016-2018), the UN Human Rights Council (2014-2016), the UNESCO Executive Board (2015-2019) and the International Law Commission (2017-2021).

Most recently, Viet Nam has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure with a near unanimous vote.

This is the second time that Viet Nam has been elected to the UN body with a leading role in maintaining international peace and security, which is not only a recognition of the international community for Viet Nam’s renewal and integration position, but also the trust and expectations on the country’s responsible contributions to regional and international peace and security in the coming years.

As an active and responsible member of the international community, Viet Nam always considers cooperation with the UN as one of the top priorities in its foreign policy. On the basis of the fine relations between the two sides over the past 40 years, we are completely optimistic about the Viet Nam-UN relations in the time ahead, thereby contributing to the joint efforts of the international community so that the blue color of the UN flag will forever be the blue of peace, sustainable development, faith and hopes in a bright future.
