Speaking at a joint press conference with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc following their talks in Nay Pyi Taw on December 17, Aung San Suu Kyi said Myanmar wishes to learn from Viet Nam’s experience in improving the people’s lives, and to accelerate bilateral cooperation in the field of culture, especially as the two countries share historical similarities.

For his part, PM Phuc said his talks with the Myanmar leader was a success, as it comprehensively touched on the various cooperation areas between the two countries.

The two sides inked a number of important documents and discussed measures to remove the barriers in order to further facilitate their investments in the near future.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in the fields of defence, security and foreign affairs, pledging to support each other at regional and international forums of mutual concern, the PM stated.

Concerning the East Sea issue, the leaders discussed and voiced support for ASEAN’s stance on a peaceful East Sea in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Myanmar pledged to support Viet Nam to effectively perform its role as the ASEAN Chair 2020 and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021 tenure.

The two sides agreed to facilitate the exchange of high-level delegations, especially during Viet Nam’s ASEAN Chairmanship Year, PM Phuc said, adding that he had invited the Myanmar State Counsellor to visit Viet Nam at an appropriate time.

Viet Nam shares Myanmar’s concern regarding the issue in Rakhine state and will continue joining ASEAN member countries to support Myanmar to harmoniously deal with the issue on the basis of peace and national reconciliation, he affirmed.
