VN, US look to new relationship

VGP – Viet Nam and the US need to work towards a new relationship for their long-term sake, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung has said.

The Chairman made the statement on April 17 during his Ha Noi talks with President pro tempore of the US Senate Patrick Leahy.

He said he expects that the President pro tempore’s visit will further strengthen the two nations’ relationship.

He confirmed that Viet Nam attaches importance to the relationship with the US and determines to launch agreements in the spirit of comprehensive partnership.

He highly valued the role of the US congressmen in promoting the two nations’ relationship and enhancing knowledge between the two sides.

In 2013, two-way trade between the two countries reached US$29 billion and the US’s investment in Viet Nam reached US$10 billion.

The two countries have closely cooperated in education, science and national security.

The host suggested the two sides increases dialogues to serve the recognition of Viet Nam as a market economy and the negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

For his side, Mr. Patrik Leahy affirmed support for the cooperation between the two Governments in overcoming war consequences.

On this occasion, Mr. Hung invited Mr. Patrik Leahy and the US congressmen to attend the132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU132) which will be convened in Ha Noi in 2015.
