VN, Singapore to upgrade cooperative ties

VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung is expected to meet with his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong and President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam to talk about bilateral ties during his tour to Singapore for the 12th IISS Asian Security Summit (Shangri-La Dialogue).

Viet Nam and Singapore have planned to elevate their bilateral ties to strategic partnership at the upcoming official visit of PM Lee Hsien Loong to Viet Nam this September. Both sides would issue a joint declaration on their strategic partnership which would mark an important development in the bilateral relationship.

Singapore is a leading investment partner of Viet Nam with around 1,100 projects which registered total capital of US$24 billion. Two-way trade turnover has been spiraling yearly, touching US$9.6 billion in 2012. 

Cooperation between the two sides has expanded broadly to include investment, finance-banking, education-training, trade-service and transport.

*Vietnamese PM’s keynote speech

As scheduled, Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung on May 31 will deliver a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Shangri-La Dialogue.

In practice, in every dialogue, the opening speech defines key contents and shows standpoints for settling issues which relate to regional and international security challenges and introduces initiatives to encourage the international community to join and resolve disputes in accordance with regional and national interests. 

The Dialogue will also host six special sessions on Avoiding Incidents at Sea; Afghan Drawdown and Regional Security; Missile Defense in the Asia-Pacific; New Military Technologies and Doctrines; Defense Diplomacy and Conflict Prevention; and Cyber Dimension to Asian Security.

This year, 31 countries will participate in the event including Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Columbia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Timor-Leste, UAE, the UK, the US, and Viet Nam./.
