The agreement was reached by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea Kang Kyung Wha at their talks on Friday morning.

The pair welcomed efforts in promoting dialogue and peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

They voiced support for maintaining peace, stable security, and the peaceful settlement of the East Sea issue in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS).

Regarding bilateral ties, Deputy PM, FM Minh affirmed Viet Nam always treasures the relationship with the RoK and wishes to strengthen cooperation in order to further boost the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership in a more practical manner, especially in the context that the two countries are heading to the 30th founding anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2020.

Minh hailed the two countries’ efforts in maintaining all-level exchanges and cooperation across fields, especially economic domain despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

He suggested both sides resume high-level visits and facilitate import of Vietnamese agricultural products, such as pomelo and red dragon fruit, while helping Viet Nam join Korean businesses’ value chains in the Northeast Asian country and in the world as well.

Kang, who was the first foreign minister to have visited Viet Nam so far this year, lauded Viet Nam’s efforts in containing the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the country’s role as the ASEAN 2020 Chair amid a host of difficulties caused by the pandemic.

She affirmed the Korean Government attaches importance to and wishes to further deepen the relationship with Viet Nam – a major partner in its New Southern Policy.

The Korean Government will continue support and assistance for Viet Nam to perform the roles of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the ASEAN 2020 Chair; coordinate closely with Viet Nam to accelerate the implementation of high-level agreements practically and effectively, contributing to advancing the two countries’ strategic cooperative partnership to a new height, Kang emphasized./.
