The 3rd biennial meeting of the Việt Nam-New Zealand Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation was co-chaired by the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyễn Thành Biên and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Tony Browne of the host country.

New Zealand pledged to continue its support for Việt Nam at regional and international organizations and forums. It will increase technical assistance for Việt Nam in the fields of agriculture, rural development, natural resources, the environment, science, technology, education and training.

The New Zealand officials also promised to promote bilateral cooperation in other areas such as finance and customs.

The two sides agreed to jointly organize a series of activities to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Việt Nam and New Zealand in 2010.

New Zealand plans to host a seminar in April to spotlight new business opportunities in ASEAN countries afforded by the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), as well as investment opportunities in Việt Nam.

Meanwhile, Việt Nam will organize a workshop in Hồ Chí Minh City in the second quarter of this year to help domestic enterprises gain insight into the AANZFTA.

A large number of officials and entrepreneurs from both nations will attend the two events.

At the meeting, New Zealand officials spoke highly of Việt Nam’s achievements over the last year, including its economic growth rate of 5.32%, despite the global economic crisis. They also hailed opportunities to invest in education and training, forestry and building material production in Việt Nam.

During the Vietnamese delegation’s trip to New Zealand, Trade Minister Tim Groser met with Deputy Minister Biên and Vietnamese Ambassador Vương Hải Nam to seek measures to beef up bilateral economic and trade ties and strengthen coordination at multilateral forums.

Mr. Biên also held working sessions with leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) agency./.
