VN, Laos boost labor cooperation

VGP - Policy makers of Viet Nam and Laos met in the central province of Nghe An province on August 18 to review progress in implementing an agreement aimed at bolstering labor cooperation.

Statistics of the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) showed that approximately 13,500 Vietnamese, mostly skilled workers, are employed to work for cooperation investment projects between the two countries’ agencies or localities, and Vietnamese contractors in Laos.

With the strong growth of Vietnamese investment in Laos, the number of Vietnamese guest workers in the country is expected to increase to at least 20,000 next year.

About 5,000 – 6,000 Vietnamese workers are sent to Laos each year, mostly working in such fields as construction, mining, agriculture, and trading services. Their average income ranges between VND7 – 8 million/month (around US$350).

Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa said Viet Nam will continue to assist Laos in training skilled laborers, thus improving the quality of its human resources.
