The Statement aims to strengthen the bilateral defense ties, maintain security and stability in the region, protect international principles and law, and cooperate to deal with non-traditional security threats and relevant risks.

It also specifies contents in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthening cooperation among defence officials and related activities signed in October 2010.

At their talks on the same day, Lich affirmed Viet Nam always attaches importance to further deepening the traditional cooperation between the armies for sake of their people and for peace, stability, cooperation and development of the ASEAN Community, the region and the world.

Lich, who is on an official visit to Indonesia, also said Viet Nam highly values the role and position of Indonesia in the region, especially in ASEAN.

Meanwhile, Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu expressed his belief that Lich’s visit would help boost the traditional ties between the two nations’ armies, thus contributing to the two countries’ strategic partnership.

Both sides agreed that the bilateral defense ties have continued advancing with pratical achievements gained in line with the Memorandum of Understanding on enhancing defense cooperation inked in October 2010, particularly in the areas of exchanging visits, joint activities of their naval, air and coast guard forces and training.

They pledged to continue with consultation and mutual support at multilateral forums and in issues of mutual concerns.

Regarding the fishermen-related issue, Lich said pending the demarcation of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the two sides’ law enforcement agencies should coordinate in sharing information and addressing arising situations to avoid regretable incidents.

Ryamizard Ryacudu affirmed that his ministry will cooperate with other relevant ministries and agencies to settle the issue to maintain the good relationship with Viet Nam.
