VN, EU work to strengthen employee rights

VGP - The Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and the European Union (EU) held a workshop on April 20, focusing on recommendations for Viet Nam’s policymaking regarding employee rights.

April 21, 2015 10:40 AM GMT+7
The project aims to enhance the capacity of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour to supervise and understand workers’ situations, as well as the ability to support workers with legal consultation and awareness of their rights.

Speaking at the workshop, VASS Vice President Professor Dr Nguyen Quang Thuan said the European Union supported Viet Nam to implement the project “Strengthening the rights of workers and representatives of trade unions” since October 2012.

Project Coordinator Dr Michela Cerimele from Italy’s Naples ‘L’ Orientale’ University stressed that empowering employees is a key target in development strategies towards reducing poverty.

The scholar underlined the need to respect the basic rights of labourers including ensuring appropriate incomes and social welfare.

Project partners have provided legal advice to workers in some industrial zones in Ha Noi, Vinh Phuc, and Hai Duong provinces, and held training sessions for trade union officials in these localities.
