VN, China eyes to speed up border demarcation

VNGOP - Vietnamese and Chinese government officials met in Beijing from July 21- 23 to discuss border and territorial issues.

July 25, 2007 7:15 AM GMT+7

The two sides had thorough and frank discussions on sea-related issues and agreed to strictly implement the understanding reached by the two countries' leaders. All sea-related issues will be addressed properly to maintain the stability in the East Sea and avoid any negative impacts on the two countries' relationship. The negotiators also pledged that neither country would exacerbate existing disputes, complicate the situation, use force or the threat of force while the two sides are resolving the sea issues.

They promised to study seriously recommendations and proposals that both sides put forth during the process of seeking fundamental and long term solutions to the sea issue. The officials also agreed to continue cooperation in marine protection, tsunami forecasting, marine research and sea search and rescue.

In addition, they agreed to speed up negotiations on the delineation of waters outside the Gulf of Tonkin and on a cooperative model for mutual development in the area.

On the demarcation of and the planting of markers along the two countries' common land border, the officials reached a consensus that the task must be implemented at a quicker pace if the 2008 deadline is to be met.

The next meeting of Vietnamese and Chinese negotiators will take place in Việt Nam.
