VN, Canada agree to enhance cooperation

VGP – Viet Nam and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including economics, trade, science and technology, and education.

The agreement was reached during the talks between Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh and Canadian FM John Baird as part of Mr. Minh’s official visit to Canada from September 29-30.

Deputy PM, FM Minh affirmed that Viet Nam attaches importance to developing comprehensive, stable and long-term relations with Canada.

He suggested that the two countries should boost the exchange of delegations at all levels, asking Canada to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to successfully integrate into the host country.

Deputy PM, FM Minh also spoke highly of and voiced support for Canada’s efforts to foster partnership with ASEAN and Asia-Pacific, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

Canadian FM John Baird highly valued Viet Nam’s socio-economic development and international integration achievements as well as the Southeast Asian country’s role in the region.

He stated that developing ties with Viet Nam is part of his country’s foreign policy for Asia-Pacific.

After the talks, the two sides signed an agreement to beef up cooperation between the two foreign ministries.

During his stay in Canada, Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh also met with Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie Christian Paradis.

Minister Christian Paradis affirmed that Canada backs Viet Nam’s economic development strategy, pledging to provide assistance for Viet Nam to reform the banking system, for small and medium size enterprises, vocational training and sustainable governance.

Deputy PM, FM Minh also met with Trade Minister Ed Fast and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. He also conveyed Viet Nam’s invitation to the head of the Canadian Parliament to attend the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Viet Nam next year./.
