In 2006, Vietnam helped train a number of Cambodian athletes in shooting, table tennis, wrestling, and badminton. In April 2007, the Open Cycling Cup was held by the Hồ Chí Minh City Television Station, covering a route to Phnom Penh.

At the reception, Secretary of State Bun Sok showed his hope to receive the Vietnamese Government's assistance in training Cambodian athletes in all sports. Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm agreed with the guest's proposal and entrusted the University of Sports and Physical Education II in Hồ Chí Minh City to fulfill this duty.

On the same day, Vietnam and Cambodia signed a six-point agreement on ratcheting up athletics and sports cooperation. Signatories of the agreement were Nguyễn Danh Thái, Minister-Chairman of the Vietnam Committee of Sports and Physical Culture and the Secretary of State of Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Bun Sok.
Under the five-year plan, national sports federations and sports agencies of Vietnamese and Cambodian provinces that buffet their shared border will be encouraged to strengthen sports through the exchange of athletes, coaches, referees, officials and experts and programs.

The two sides agreed to promote sports cooperation through exchanging athletes and sports teams in training courses before the SEA Games; and sharing coaches, referees, experts, managers, information and publications, sports research programs and results./.
