VN joins UN member states in handling global challenges

As usual, in September, the world leaders gather at the UN headquarters in New York to discuss the pressing global issues.

The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly is run by former Ecuador Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa, who is the fourth woman and the first Latin American woman to lead the UN General Assembly in its 73-year history. Annually, the selected President of the UN General Assembly holds consultations with member countries, and the UN Secretary-General designates the main topic for the UN General Assembly’s high-level General Debate.

The high-level General Debate at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly takes place from September 25 to October 1 under the theme “Making the UN Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies”.

By participating in the meeting, the Vietnamese delegation emphasizes its message to call for strengthened global partnership for a world of peace, equality and sustainable development for all people, while highlighting the importance of complying with international law, preventing and peacefully settling disputes, and not using or threatening to use force.

The participation affirms Viet Nam’s consistent policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development, diversification and multilateralization of external relations, proactive and active international integration, willingness to share common responsibilities, and action for peace and prosperity in the world.

Viet Nam officially joined the UN on September 20, 1977, and since then the country’s relationship with the organization has been increasingly growing. The Viet Nam-UN cooperation is an outstanding example of development cooperation between the UN member states, as well as the role of the UN in promoting international cooperation aiming to deal with socio-economic, cultural and humanitarian issues.

During the process of Viet Nam’s industrialization, modernization and international integration, the UN has actively supported the country to successfully implement its socio-economic development goals and become one of the states that have completed the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
