UNSC non-permanent membership: “Golden” opportunity for promoting national position

Viet Nam assumes the role in the context of profound changes in the region and the world, including prolonged conflicts in Africa, rising escalation in the Middle East and potential risks in some regions.

Though peace, cooperation and development remains the mainstream across the world, multilateral and global mechanisms are all facing numerous difficulties. Strategic friction among major powers has led to complicated corollaries and caused stalemate in some issues.

Against that backdrop, Viet Nam will continue consistent pursuance of the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization and diversification of external relations, Minh wrote.

Viet Nam will make efforts in fostering dialogue, reducing tensions and confrontation, and seeking fair and proper solutions for issues that threaten peace and security in the region and the world.

Viet Nam will also forge the observation of international law, the United Nations Charter, especially the fundamental principles on territorial equality among countries, respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and socio-political system, and peaceful settlement of disputes.

The country will uphold the spirit of “partnership for sustainable peace” with a focus on conflict prevention, peace building, post-conflict reconstruction, and intensification of multilateralism and multilateral institutions, especially the United Nations and regional organizations.

Deputy PM, FM Minh affirmed Viet Nam will accelerate the common interests of the international community right from the first day as the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

As the President of the Untied Nations Security Council in January, Viet Nam will play an active and responsible role in leading the work of the United Nations Security Council a principled, unbiased and transparent manner with respect for the United Nations Charter and the Council’s working procedures.

The country will try to conduct broad consultations with the member countries of the United Nations, especially Asian and ASEAN countries in the direction of increasing democracy and trapsparency of the operation of the United Nations Security Council.

Minh expressed his belief that with the foreign policy of independence and re-reliance, the country’s new position, the support from the international community, its experience in leading leading multilateral mechanisms and thorough preparations, Viet Nam will successfully fulfill the Presidency role./.
