UNESCO approves dossier on celebrating 650th death anniversary of Chu Van An

VGP - The 206th meeting of the UNESCO Executive Board, held in Paris, France, approved the celebration of the 650th death anniversary of Chu Van An, a famous Vietnamese educator in the 14th century.

The UNESCO Executive Board ratified the list of dossiers suggesting the UNESCO General Assembly issue a resolution on celebration of outstanding events and figures.

Earlier, a dossier to request UNESCO celebrate the 650th death anniversary of Chu Van An was submitted along with 71 dossiers from 41 nations.

UNESCO honored Viet Nam's outstanding figures during their celebration, such as Nguyen Trai on his 600^th birthday anniversary (1980), President Ho Chi Minh on his 100^th birthday anniversary (1990) and Nguyen Du on his 250^th birthday anniversary (2015).

UNESCO’s approval of the dossier on celebrating the 650th death anniversary of Chu Van An affirms the international community’s high valuations of Viet Nam’s culture and education as well as introduces equality goals in education for everyone and the spirit of studying.

Chu Van An was born in 1292 in Van Thon Village, now part of Thanh Tri District in Ha Noi.

He is a major influence to popularize Confucian thinking in Viet Nam. When he was invited to teach the crown prince and the king refused his proposal to kill seven corrupted mandarins, he gave up the position and lived the rest of his life as a teacher and writer at Phuong Hoang Mountain in Hai Duong Province. After his death, an altar was set up in the Temple of Literature.
