UNDP to back VN put Green Book into reality

VGP – On behalf of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), UN Coordinator in Việt Nam, Mr. John Hendra vowed to keep assisting the nation to conduct the Việt Nam Integrated National Operational Program for Avian and Human Influenza 2006-2010 (the Green Book) in a plenary meeting of the Partnership on Avian and Human Influenza on October 8, in Hà Nội.

Entitling Việt Nam as the best fighter in preventing and stamping out bird flu, Mr. John Hendra warned that as the virus still exists, it is necessary to continue controlling risks of epidemic recurrence. The UN official also proposed some future priorities to be focused on, such as keeping H5N1 virus under control, restructuring animal husbandry, strictly inspecting the transport and consumption of poultry, and reviewing the national plan to deal with the epidemic.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Head of the National Steering Committee for the prevention of avian influenza, Cao Đức Phát considered the absolute control over the epidemic as a huge challenge. Việt Nam has already mustered all domestic sources for this mission, proactively transforming poultry breeding industry and applying both medium- and long-term preventive measures, he said.

Assisting Việt Nam to realize the Green Book, UNDP hoped to minimize the risk of a new bird flu outbreak and to enhance the country’s capacity of managing disease nidus. Furthermore, the Green Book also aims at a joint coordination among the Government, foreign donators, and other partners through the the Partnership on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza (PAHI).

So far, the program has mobilized US $201 million out of the total US $250 million for the period of 2006-10.
