UNDP, RoK help VN overcome post-war consequences

VGP - The Viet Nam National Mine Action Centre (VNMAC) and the UN Development Program (UNDP), with the support of the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s Government, organized a training course on bomb and mine operations in Ha Noi on July 9.

The course is from July 9-13 in Ba Vi District, Ha Noi as the first activity within the framework of a project between Viet Nam and the RoK to address war-era landmine consequences. 

It aims to provide knowledge on bomb and mine operations, especially concentrating on key factors such as information and quality management and realizing researches and surveys for participated working groups. 

Addressing the opening ceremony, VNMAC Vice General Director Nguyen Van Nghiep said that in order to catch up with the fourth industrial revolution, the management of work relating to the settlement of left-over unexploded ordnances (UXO) will now be implemented with computer software instead of on paper, which makes the work faster, more convenient, and accurate.

Trainees will be divided to groups of 10 for tasks practicing  heldwith modern equipment and tools.

Nil Chirstensen from the UNDP said that the program has held bomb and mine action projects in 20 countries, with an aim to improve the skills and capacity of agencies in making plans, and defining prioritized bomb and mine actions.

The course is expected to provide a new approach through the globally-successful lessons, offering trainees insight into bomb and mine clearance.

The project between Viet Nam and the RoK to overcome consequences of bombs and mine will be launched from 2018-2020, heading to eliminate effects of bombs and mine after the war, ensuring safety for local people in two central provinces of Quang Binh and Binh Dinh. 

The project is worth nearly US$30 million, including US$20 million from the RoK’s Government and around US$10 million from the Vietnamese Government.
