UN remains a focus in Viet Nam’s foreign policy

VGP – Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh affirmed the United Nations remains a focus in Viet Nam’s foreign policy during his reception for Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam Kamal Malhotra in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Binh extended congratulations to Kamal Malhotra, resident representatives and staffs of the United Nations agencies in Viet Nam on the occasion of the United Nations Day (October 24).

He emphasized Viet Nam advocates multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in sustaining global peace and security, sustainable development and resolution of global challenges.

Viet Nam also supports preventive diplomacy, prevention of conflicts, and settlement of disputes through peaceful measures with respect for the United Nations Charter and international law, Binh added.

He reiterated Viet Nam’s advocacy for reform efforts in order to improve development cooperation effectiveness and assist the United Nations member countries to realize their development priorities and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The Deputy PM asked the United Nations organizations to update new trends and potential crises in the region and the world as well as impacts on Viet Nam while strengthening strategic policy recommendations to help the Southeast Asian country realize its priorities, including economic restructuring and transformation of growth model, improvement of productivity and competitiveness, and infrastructure development.

Binh urged the Government Office, Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to review and put forwards measures to further simplify procedures for management and reception of official development assistance and ratification of non-refundable aid to fully utilize international support.

On behalf of the United Nations organizations in Viet Nam, Malhotra congratulated Viet Nam on its socio-economic achievements and international position.

He suggested Viet Nam and the United Nations organizations should work together to organize an international conference on women and peace in 2020 on the occasion of the 75th founding anniversary of the United Nations and Viet Nam’s assumption of the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council in 2020.

Malhotra appreciated that Viet Nam was the first country in Asia to have ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and its commitments to this domain.

Speaking highly of the Vietnamese Government’s adoption of social security policies over the past time, Malhotra vowed to work side by side with Viet Nam to achieve sustainable development and design such policies on productivity and competitiveness improvement./.
