Việt Nam earned US $46 million from exporting tra catfish to the US in the first half of this year, posting a year-on-year surge of 60%. The US has become the tra importer with highest growth rate.

The Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep) said the US Department of Commerce has not decided to apply no anti-dumping tax or very low tax rates on six Vietnamese seafood exporters.

Bình An Seafood Joint Stock Company (Bianfishco) in the southern city of Cần Thơ will export over 50 containers of frozen tra catfish to the US market in August.

The company, which established an affiliate in California in March, exported more than 2,500 tons of the fish worth of nearly US $7 million in June, compared with US $5.3 million in May.

The Cần Thơ-based Southern Seafood Industry Company (South Vina) exported 1,000 tons of frozen tra in June while it delivered 3,583 tons in the first five months of this year.

An increasing volume of tra is being shipped to Russia and other newly-opened markets.

Between May and June, Việt Nam exported over 10,000 tons of tra and basa catfish to Russia. The export volume in July is expected to stand at 15,000 tons.

The MARD said Russia has recognized ten Vietnamese tra exporters eligible for exporting the fish to the country. The ministry is proposing the Russian side to increase the number of such exporters.

Other foreign markets, including Eastern Europe, Chile, Peru, Mexico and some African countries, are importing greater quantity of Vietnamese tra fish, said Vasep.
