Party General Secretary, State President Nguyen Phu Trong (R) and Secretary of the Security Council of Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev, Ha Noi, March 17, 2021 - PHoto: VNA

The Party chief affirmed that security-defence cooperation remains one of the key pillars in the Viet Nam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

The top Vietnamese leader expressed his hope that both countries will continue strengthening and expanding cooperation in such fields like non-traditional and traditional security issues for mutual benefits of the two nations and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

In reply, Patrushev congratulated Viet Nam on the success of the 13th National Party Congress and Trong on re-election as General Secretary of the Party Central Committee.

Patrushev reiterated that that Russia treasures its comprehensive strategic partnership with the Southeast Asian nation, and wishes that the bilateral ties will be further consolidated in a stable and sustainable manner.

He said his ongoing visit to Viet Nam aimed to realize the agreements reached between Trong and Russian leaders, including President Vladimir Putin, in their recent phone conversations.

The same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also hosted a reception for Patrushev, during which he extended congratulations to Russia on successful manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines, expressing his strong belief that Russia will soon overcome the pandemic.

Phuc thanked the Russian Government for having donated a batch of Sputnik-V vaccine and sent experts and medical equipment to Viet Nam to help the Southeast Asian country in the fight against COVID-19.

The Government chief praised the outcomes of the working sessions between the delegation of the Security Council of Russian Federation and Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of National Defence.

Despite difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the two countries could still promoted cooperation in politics, diplomacy, security and defense, trade, and investment, PM Phuc highlighted.

The two-way trade increased sharply to US4.9 billion in 2020 and Russian groups have been running many important projects in Viet Nam, according to PM Phuc.

The Vietnamese Government chief suggested both sides double efforts to resolve obstacles to speed up implementation of projects in sluggish progress, pledging to create favorable conditions for Russian businesses to invest in Viet Nam.

Patrushev affirmed Russia stands ready to support Viet Nam in fighting money laundering and terrorism.

He also affirmed Russia is willing to provide Viet Nam with a sufficient volume of Sputnik-V vaccine, he added.
