Third ARF workshop on implementing UNCLOS 1982 held

VGP - The third ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) workshop on implementing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) and other international instruments to address emerging maritime issues took place virtually from June 1-2.

Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu deliveres a speech at the third ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) workshop on implementing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982), Ha Noi, June 1, 2021.

The event, part of activities  realizing the ARF Ha Noi Plan of Action II (2020-2025) and the ARF Declaration on Cooperation between law enforcement agencies at sea, attracted the participation of 200 delegates from 27 nations in the ARF, international and regional originations, diplomatic agencies and other relevant ministries and agencies. 

Delegates discussed cooperative orientations to handle challenges in maritime management in the region on the basis of observing and implementing the UNCLOS 1982 and other related documents. 

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu affirmed the crucial role of the UNCLOS 1982 as the “Constitution” of the ocean and the legal framework for addressing challenges at seas in the region, including merging challenges after the Convention was adopted. 

All disputes at the East Sea must be tackled with peaceful measures in line with the international laws, including the UNCLOS 1982 and goodwill cooperation, making contributions to building trust between related sides, promoting peace, security and prosperity in the region, said Hieu. 

At the workshop, the Canadian and Australian Ambassadors highlighted the role and value of the UNCLOS 1982. 

The Canadian Ambassador vowed to support efforts of all countries in managing and handling with disputes with peaceful measures in accordance with the international laws.
