In a frank and open spirit, the delegates including the Government leaders, ministers, executives of big economic groups had thorough discussions to find out the best solution for environmental protection and sustainable development in the region and the world.

Over the past years, Asia has obtained a rapid economic growth. Recently, with the emergence of Indian, Chinese and ASEAN economies, the international community became worried about environmental problems in Asia. To deal with these challenges, many Asian governments have made great efforts to protect environment. Air-pollution control has been tightened in many Asian cities.

Attending the WEF plenary session, Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng gave answers to many questions on handling environmental pollution while maintaining sustainable economic growth in Vietnam. The Deputy PM's speech clearly pointed out the Vietnamese Government's consistent policies on environmental protection, economic development and poverty reduction.

Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng emphasized that, like other developing countries, Vietnam is facing big challenges posed by poverty alleviation, industrial development and environmental protection. Vietnam always pays great attention to environmental protection in every policy on socio-economic development, he said. The Vietnamese Government is focusing on increasing the public awareness of environmental protection. Vietnam is also making use of all external resources, especially assistance from international organizations and businesses. The Deputy PM asserted that educational work is very important in protecting the environment. He also suggested to set specific standards to harmoniously combine sustainable development and environmental protection.

Previously, on June 24, the first WEF session titled "The Leadership Imperative for an Asian Century" was opened during which all delegates discussed on major topics, including managing threats to Asia's prosperity; leading change in a globalized world: the Asian way; the Asianization of global markets and institutions; and energy security in Asia. The delegates also shared information, analyzed and predicted new development tendencies in the region and the world, stressing Asia's participation in dealing with regional and global issues.
