Success of 30th SEA Games athletes inspires socio-economic development

VGP – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said success of athletes at the 30th SEA Games gives an important boost to socio-economic development.

Phuc made the statement on Sunday at his meeting with outstanding coaches and athletes who have won medals at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines.

Tran Duc Phan, head of the Viet Nam’s sports delegation said this is the first time Viet Nam overcome Thailand to finish second in the SEA Games with 98 gold medals.

Viet Nam was behind Thailand before the final day of the SEA Games by one gold medal with 79 as compared to the latter’s 80. Howver, in what turned out to be a topsy and turvy day, Viet Nam won 10 gold medals, including the Beach Handball event and managed to clinch the second spot on the SEA Games 2019 medals tally with a total of 288 medals.

Particularly, both women and men’s football teams won gold medals for the first time in a SEA Games, in which the former successfully defended champion title and the latter were crowned champion to end a long wait.

PM Phuc said the 30th SEA Games was unforgettable as it brought pride to our nation thanks to a lot of moving stories of athletes who have overcome numerous hardships and demonstrated wonderful aspiration, contributing to creating jubilant atmosphere.

He called for greater support and assistance from all sectors and the society to help athletes in training and getting jobs.

Also at the meeting, PM Phuc conferred First-Class Labor Order to the Vietnamese sports delegation and swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien; Second-Class Labor Order to the men’s national football team, women’s national football squad and its coach Mai Duc Chung.

The Government chief also presented Third-Class Labor Order to 26 individuals, including footballers Hong Hung, Hai Yen, Van Hau, Hung Dung, Duc Chinh, Tien Linh, and Trong Hoang./.
