President Nguyễn Minh Triết meets Overseas Vietnamese in New York

President Nguyễn Minh Triết visited the headquarters of the Vietnamese residence delegation to the United Nations and had talks to overseas Vietnamese living in New York.  Addressing the meeting, the State President said "Apart from strengthening and boosting the Vietnam-US relationship, my visit to the US is also a good opportunity for me to meet Vietnamese nationals settling in the US, to listen to your opinions and inform you about the situation at home". He reaffirmed the Party and State's policy to solidify the whole-people solidarity as a strong motive force for the cause of national industrialization and modernization, for the sake of a powerful country, wealthy people and an equal, democratic and civilized society. In that cause, overseas Vietnamese community is an indispensable part of the family of all Vietnamese ethnic groups, the President emphasized. “Our Vietnamese country is one, our Vietnamese nation is one. We are of the same origins. There is no reason why we divide ourselves while trying to unite with other countries,” he said, calling on overseas Vietnamese to remember their fatherland, and teach the Vietnamese language to their children.

President Nguyễn Minh Triết announced that overseas Vietnamese will not need visas when visiting the homeland as of September 1st, 2007. He added that Vietnam has mapped out a draft regulation to allow overseas Vietnamese to buy houses and lands in the country, thus creating more favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to come back to the homeland. He stressed that it is time for all Vietnamese members to heal wounds of the past, look toward a bright future, and build up a powerful and rich Vietnam.
