State President meets US top legislators

VNGOP- State President Nguyễn Minh Triết said he expected the US congress to back endeavours to ratchet up economic and trade ties between Viet Nam and the US when he met with some of Capitol Hill's most influential policy makers, in Washington D.C. on June 21 (local time).

President Nguyễn Minh Triết met with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives,

Vietnamese State President's hosts included Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the US Senate; Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the US Senate; representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties in the House; and senators who have supported Viet Nam-US relations.

The State President said that he was hopeful that US lawmakers would support US hi-tech exports to Viet Nam and that the Southeast Asian country has always considered the US as one of its most important partner with whom Viet Nam wishes to build a friendly partnership and multi-faceted cooperation in an effective and sustainable manner for the sake of the two nations' long-term and strategic benefit.

"It is normal that the two countries still have different views regarding the concepts and implementation of areas such as human rights as we come from differing historical circumstances, cultural traditions and customs," the  State President noted.

However, he underlined that the differences were minor in comparison with the two countries' interests and potential for cooperation and that a peaceful, prosperous Viet Nam would benefit Viet Nam, the US and Southeast Asia at large.

The State President took the opportunity to thank the Speaker of the House of Representatives and other congressmen for approving the application of Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status to Viet Nam last December as well as the endorsement of a 3-million USD fund to help detoxify Agent Orange-contaminated areas in Viet Nam.

For her part, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi warmly welcomed President  Nguyễn Minh Triết in his first visit to her country and expressed her belief that the visit would help define the multi-faceted relations between the two sides.

Meanwhile, the US senators were of the view that a peaceful and stable Viet Nam will contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world. They called on the Southeast Asian country to play a more significant role in addressing problems in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

Earlier in the day, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết received a group of clergymen representing different religions in the US and toured a vineyard owned by the Pau Breaux family in Virginia.

Viet Nam, US sign trade and investment agreement

President Nguyễn Minh Triết witnessed the signing of the Viet Nam-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA)

State President Nguyễn Minh Triết witnessed the signing of the Viet Nam-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) by Vietnamese Deputy Trade Minister Nguyen Cam Tu and Deputy US Trade Representative Karan Bhatia, in Washington on June 21.

The Vietnamese State leader also witnessed the signing of six investment and cooperation agreements between US and Vietnamese businesses that were worth close to 5 billion USD.

Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN), the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) and the Chevron Group signed a letter of intent on a 4 billion USD gas development project in Viet Nam’s southwestern territorial waters while Viet Nam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) and SSA Marine signed a 500 million USD project to build wharves and supply multilateral transport services.

The signing took place at a banquet in honour of President Nguyễn Minh Triết and his delegation that featured prominent members of US business circles at the Willard Intercontinental Washington Hotel in Washington D.C.

The State President expressed his delight at the US Government business and public's outstanding welcome that had been extended to him during his official visit to the country, which he said reflected the US's desire to promote friendship and cooperation with Viet Nam.

State President celebrates ASEAN’s 40th anniversary in US

State President Nguyễn Minh Triết attended a celebration of ASEAN’s 40th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-US dialogue in Washington D.C. on June 21.

The meeting was co-organised by the embassies of ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and US government departments.
Regarding the ASEAN-US dialogue, President Nguyễn Minh Triết highlighted the US as a long-term and key partner of ASEAN, particularly in trade and investment and its crucial role in keeping stability and peace in the region.

ASEAN member countries attach great importance to fostering both bilateral and multilateral ties with the US , he said.

President Nguyễn Minh Triết said he believed that the upcoming summit to be held in Singapore in September to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-US dialogue relations would prove to be a great success and take the partnership to new heights.

Viet Nam, he said, will continue to make concerted efforts to contribute to the success of the summit and promote ASEAN-US relations./.
