State President holds talks with Irish counterpart

VGP – Irish President Michael D. Higgins affirmed that his country expects stronger ties with Viet Nam which has an increasingly important role in Asia-Pacific during his talks with Vietnamese counterpart Tran Dai Quang on Monday.

The two Presidents expressed their pleasure at the positive advancement of the bilateral relations over the past time. The two-way trade value rose to US$798 million in the first nine months this year.

They agreed to further strengthen cooperation in such potential fields like trade, investment, education and training, green technologies, agriculture, healthcare and sustainable development.

Both sides also agreed to further create favorable conditions for their businesses to enhance investment and technology transfer, particularly in agriculture, food processing, information and communication, aviation among others. 

The two nations agreed that education and training will be a key pillar of the bilateral relations and they will encourage their tertiary establishments to develop partnership.

President Michael D. Higgins said that Ireland will soon announce a national cooperation strategy with Viet Nam for the period 2017-2020. 

He vowed to continue support for Viet Nam to fight poverty, cope with climate change and realize the United Nations-led millennium development goals.

 The two Presidents unanimously agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and security, accelerating development cooperation across the world.

 They pledged to continue close coordination at international forums like the United Nations, ASEM and ASEAN-EU mechanisms in order to settle global issues, including climate change adaptation for a green and peaceful planet.

 Exchanging views on the East Sea issue, the two sides shared the position of settling disputes through peaceful measures on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Following their talks, the two Presidents witnessed the signing of deals on development cooperation, education and training, wind power, information technology, telecommunication, and medical equipment./.
