The State President thanked the UN for its assistance to Viet Nam over the recent 40 years, which has helped the nation gain socio-economic achievements and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The year 2017 marks 40 years since Viet Nam joined the UN and the first year of implementing the Viet Nam-UN Joint Strategic Plan for 2017-2021, the State President said, adding that this is a good chance for both sides to review their cooperation over the past years and propose measures to strengthen future bilateral ties.

Viet Nam expects that the UN will continue upholding its role in maintaining international peace and security and supporting countries, including Viet Nam, to successfully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, he said.

The State President affirmed that the nation hopes to promote cooperation with the UN to cope with climate change and successfully implement the Paris Agreement, especially in terms of technology development and transfer, getting access to financial resources, and working towards low-carbon economy.

Viet Nam will facilitate the operation of UN agencies, asserted Mr. Quang, expressing his hope that Mr. Kamal Malhotra will do his utmost to raise the Viet Nam-UN relations to a higher level.

For his side, Mr. Malhotra said that Viet Nam is one of the countries taking the lead in realizing the One UN Initiative and making huge contribution to the success of the initiative.

The UN expects Vietnamese Government to soon approve the Viet Nam-UN Joint Strategic Plan for 2017-2021, he said.

The UN also plans to help the country to increase its economy’s competitiveness in the region and the world, he added.
