Viet Nam and Australia officially established diplomatic relations on February 26, 1973. The two nations established comprehensive partnership in 2009 and signed a declaration on enhancing the bilateral comprehensive partnership in 2015.

The two-way trade turnover reached US$6.46 billion in 2017 and expected to hit US$10 billion in 2020.

Australia currently ranks 19th out of 116 foreign investors in Viet Nam with total investment of US$1.82 billion in 396 projects.

The two sides already inked the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and actively engage in negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

In 2017, more than 370,400 Australian visitors travelled to Viet Nam, making it one of the 10 leading source markets of Viet Nam’s tourism.

Australia is the fourth most favorite destination of Vietnamese students with about 30,000 Vietnamese students.
